Life of International Students in USA

All the students want to have education in USA because US Degree is recognized all over the world. But, American Education is not so cheap that everybody can afford it. With some exceptions, students from Asia, Africa, East Europe and South America take a huge loan from banks or sell their properties such as land, home to come to USA and have education here. They have in their mind that they can earn money in USA to pay off their bank loan or retake their land or home and also make money for further studies. But the reality is something different.

When international students come to USA, they carry money with them for tuition fee and living expenses at least for one semester. They would have made up their mind that they could find job and earn money for next semester.

International students usually get visa for 5 years but visa is nothing unless they have valid I-20 with them all the time. So, foreign students should be always be careful that their I-20 is not expired and make it valid when expires.

International students are not allowed to work in USA. But, they can have part time on-campus job in the university where they study. On-campus job is not so easy to get. There are thousands of students in a university and on campus job opportunities are limited and highly competitive too. If someone is really lucky, he can have on campus job 20 hours per week. International students are not allowed to work full time job. So, it is impossible to make money for study expenses with such part time jobs.

International students are not eligible to get Social Security Number (SSN) unless they get on campus job. Without SSN, they can open bank account and have driving license. When they get SSN with on-campus job, they can get credit card from banks with certain interest rate. They can withdraw money from bank ATMs to certain limits but if they withdraw money beyond limit, they need to pay higher rate of interest; e.g. 36%.

When we consider Western European countries, the situation is different. When international students get student visa in these countries, they also get work permit which allow the students to have part time job anywhere, inside or outside their schools. It makes the international students in Western Europe easy to sustain and afford further studies. But, the case in USA is different.

International students have a lot of opportunities in USA when they finish their college level studies successfully. After completing two full time semesters, they are allowed to have CPT (Curricular Practical Training) which gives temporary employment authorization but employment should relate with their studies.

After completion of studies, students are eligible for OPT (Optional Practical Training) which allows students to have study related employment for 1 year and they must get employment within 3 months after starting OPT period.

International students are allowed 60 days grace period after completion of studies or OPT to extend their stay or to prepare for departure from USA.

If the companies with whom they are working with, during OPT, like the students, they can sponsor the students and students can proceed for US green card which allow them to stay and work in USA permanently.

Do you know where Buddha was born?

It is not a big concern about where Buddha was born. But, for those people who are from the country where Buddha was born, it will be big matter when they hear that Buddha was born not in their country but in another country.

When I came abroad for the first time, I encountered one situation where I was tried to convince that Buddha was born in India, not in Nepal. I got a big surprise as I am from Nepal. I have encountered such situations many times in Poland and in USA. It seems that many people in different countries have misconception about Buddha's birth place. I got to know about this only when I came abroad. So, what is the reason behind this misconception?

I guess that the reason can be some false information which can be found in internet, in books and even in Bollywood films.

Google map provided false information "birthplace of Buddha, Utter Pradesh, India".

The book "The Post American World" by Fareed Zakaria (author of The Future of Freedom) provided the false information that "Buddha was Indian and Buddhism was founded in India".

A recent bollywood movie “Chandni Chowk to China (2009)” had mentioned that Buddha was born in India.

In Nepal, there were protests against the film due to a passing claim that Buddha was born in India.

Several shows were cancelled due to heavy protests from students and youth groups. Protests included threats by Buddhists to burn movie theaters that screened the film, and hurled at the Indian embassy in Katmandu.
The protests continued for several days, despite the Nepali distributor editing out the piece of narration that mentioned Buddha in the copies of the film shown in Nepal. On Thursday, 22 January Nepali cinemas stopped screening Chandni Chowk to China.

What is the Truth?

India is trying to show that Buddha was born in India and even that Kapilvastu (where Buddha spent 29 initial years of his life) is in India.

India says that the present day village in India “Piprahwa” is the ancient Kapilvastu and later it was renamed as Piprahwa.

The Truth About Kapilvastu

Kapilvastu is the name of a region of ancient Shakya kingdom that is considered a holy pilgrimage place for Buddhists, located close to Lumbini. The result of years of excavation and research by numerous international teams have concluded that Kapilvastu is in Nepal and is acknowledged by the UNESCO as well as the governments of India and Nepal.

Lack of Public Transport in U.S. Cities: Marlboro City

Marlboro (or Marlborough) is a beautiful and peaceful city. I currently live in this city and I like it. But, problem is that there is lack of public transport.

I am a student of Clark University, Worcester. I don't find any public transport to come from Marlboro to Worcester. There is one possibility to come from Marlboro to Worcester. That is bus service provided by MetroWest Regional Transit Authority (MWRTA), Framingham from Marlboro to Framingham and there is train service to come from Framingham to Worcester. But, MWRTA provides transport service only at morning and day time but not at evening time.

Recently, MWRTA provides bus service from Framingham to Marlboro and inbound to Framingham on hourly basis and this has been beneficial for residents of Marlboro city to take train from Framingham to Worcester or Boston. Otherwise, there is not any public transport provided by Marlboro city except Marlboro city taxi services. There is bus services provided by Peterpan bus or Greyhound bus to different cities of U.S. but they don't have access to Marlboro city. The possibility for Marlboro residents to get access to Peterpan bus or Greyhound bus is to come to Framingham by MWRTA bus and in Framingham, there is access to these bus services.

It is appreciable that MWRTA from Framingham  is providing public transport in Marlboro. But, sometimes, these buses make late like 10 min, 20 min, 30 min and even 1 hour than the scheduled time. It makes me to miss my train to Worcester and miss my classes in Clark University many times. It was written in MWRTA brochure "wait for bus 10 min in advance to be sure not to miss bus". But, it seems that it should be like "wait for bus 10 min after the scheduled time so that you don't need to wait longer".

There was one significant irresponsibility of MWRTA when I was waiting for last MWRTA bus to Marlboro at Framingham Downtown. I was waiting for bus from 6:15 pm. The last bus was supposed to come at 6:32 pm, but it didn't come till 7:30 pm. There were 6 passengers waiting there and one of them called MWRTA office and they sent another bus, route 1 (but route 7 for Marlboro) finally. It means that if we didn't call the office, they wouldn't provide the last bus service to Marlboro on that day. What more was that the bus ran with the screen notice"OUT OF SERVICE" and the driver just asked passengers if there was anyone to get down at certain places. One old lady at one of the MWRTA route 7 stops was waving hands with touch night in her hand to stop the bus for a ride. She was angry because of the screen notice. It was not sure how many passengers on the way were waiting for that last bus and missed that bus because of the screen notice. It seems to be one of the big irresponsibilities of MWRTA.

Facebook Craze

When I start computer, my fingers first go to the letters F, A, C, E, B, O, O and K. There is one of my friends who doesn't start a day without checking Facebook and doesn't sleep without doing so. Whenever someone is using internet, his/her Facebook is usually staying open. Either it's computer or mobile phone, everybody seems to be using Facebook on it. It hasn't been so long time for Facebook to come in existence and it has more than 500 millions active members. Some years ago, I used to be using hi5.com as a social network and I had many friends on it. Later on, just two years ago, many of my friends started to cancel their accounts from hi5.com. The reason was that they shifted to Facebook. What is the reason behind the such a craze in Facebook?

Facebook is a website which is providing social network service since February 2004. Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school, or college, or others.

One of the main reasons why many people like Facebook is a option to have live chat, which is distinct feature of Facebook than any other social network website. Here, anyone can search users from different countries around the world, view their profiles, make friends and chat. They can even send message with pictures, videos and links. They can post pictures, videos or links to their friends' profile walls. They can comments on friends' wall post, pictures, videos and links and these comments are visible to other friends. Automatic notification of profile updates, pictures/videos/link uploads and comments is significant feature of Facebook. Privacy policy of pictures, videos and links like everyone, friends only, friends of friends and customization like only for certain friends, blocking from certain friends is important feature of Facebook.

Facebook has been an effective medium of personal advertisement for promoting personal businesses, and advertising for some events and inviting people.  There are many many applications and games which have also attracted the internet users towards Facebook. "Who loves you today?", "Who missed you today?", "Love Test", "Best Friends Forever" are some of the applications.
